Here's the situation.  My feet and calves are pansies.  They can run 50 miles a week, but then change one little thing and they fall apart.  So...I'm gonna do something about it!!!!! I feel like I'm a parent who's son got beat up and now I'm teaching him martial arts so he can hold his own next time. :)  Meaning, I'm going to start running barefoot, at least a few miles a week.  Which is funny because I was a huge critic and swore I would never do it.  But I can't deny the arguments for it any longer.  They just make sense to me (as long as you do it right).  Before you freak out (I know...I know...I'm just coming off an achilles injury), just know that I'm starting out super slow (and reading everything I can about it so that I don't do something stupid). I actually haven't even wore my Vibrams yet.  I'm following the plan in this book.  I'm skipping the first step because I love to walk barefoot at home, so I don't think I need that step. Right now I'm working on making the bottoms of my feet tougher so they can start being without shoes more often by walking outside on the sidewalk for 20 minutes a day or every other day.  I won't even be running for probably a month or so.  After my 18 miler when my foot got injured, it has felt better every since to go barefoot or wear my flats or flip flops, so that's really what sealed the deal for me!  Well, that and the fact that I was injured AGAIN and had to take time off running yet again.  So here goes nothin!

Can't wait to hear how the run goes! Nice job multitasking on the elliptical! :)

I am trusting your judgement. Please be careful though ... as I know you will be.

Nice Sunnyside Loop! :) :) :)

I bought this today http://www.amazon.com/Compact-Training-Cast-iron-Vertical-Settings/dp/B0030DMMWS :)

My equipment is taking over our house. You should see my basement! :)

Thanks for not freaking out Teena, I appreciate your trust. :) :) I promise I will be super slow and super careful. I'll keep my running shoes new and current at the same time, too. :)

Haha, that's awesome!! I keep thinking I need to buy a home gym type thing sometime...I hate the commute and membership fee to the gym! Maybe when I get a living space that has more than one room. I actually think of your little basement/exercise sanctuary a lot. I can't wait to have space to have an elliptical, a TM and some weights so I can just do stuff in the morning and at night without leaving...especially when I have kids. You'll have to let us know how that thing goes! Leave it to Costco to have yet another cool thing to buy! LOL :)

I actually got mine even cheaper than the one at Costco. I got it from a place called Shape Up. It has a dent in the door. But that dent saved me a couple hundred bucks! :)

My toys now include:

PT table

treadmill

elliptical

upright stationary bike

inversion table

epic compact training system

dumbells

medicine balls

resistance bands

resistance cords

core balls

yoga mats

an extensive yoga and corework dvd collection

rollers

tension balls

stability disk

wobble board

ankle weights

(and probably more stuff that I am not remembering)

Like I said ... it is taking over our home!!! BUT as far as I see it ... exercise equipment is well worth the money if you use it!

(Oh yeah, and I have two gym memberships. Dang, I am spoiled!)

Haha, that is awesome!! :) Wow. I am so jealous! And yes, I agree, it is worth the money. Especially when you find it 2nd hand or on sale like you did. 2 memberships?! LOL :)

Nice job, way to be proactive in toughening up those legs. :) I have a brother than runs almost exclusively barefoot, and while it works well for him, I run mostly trails and (even though all the barefoot people will tell you you can do it), its just not a feasible option - one misstep and your back to square one. I tend to take the 'best of both worlds' approach with wearing something like the Altra Instinct (Intuition for the ladies). Its a zero drop shoe to strengthen those calves and achillies, and has a foot shaped design so your toes can spread and your feet can get stronger - BUT - they have some cushion (though they will have a minimal five finger like option coming out soon-no fingers though, just a regular toe box, a plus I think). Anyway, I know I'm sounding like a salesperson, and I'm really not! :) I just think that on the topic of barefoot running people seem to feel like they need to be on one side of the fence or the other, when in reality there are a lot of great options that can take advantage of what shod and unshod running can offer.

Dorsimus - I agree about the trail running! I don't think I'll ever venture that far...maybe to walk, but not run. Ouchie! People who can do that have some seriously strong skin on their feet! Those shoes sound cool. I have a couple of minimalist shoes that I love as well.
